What Counts as Physical Therapy CE in Maryland? | PT & PTA

Aug 14
Maryland Physical Therapists and Physical Therapist Assistants have more flexibility in choosing continuing education than the phrase “approved course” may suggest.

The Maryland Board of Physical Therapy Examiners maintains a list of approved courses for convenience, but it also states that not every eligible continuing education provider submits courses to the Board for review. Licensees may evaluate continuing education under the requirements established in COMAR 10.38.08.

That distinction matters when choosing professional education outside the Board’s published course list.

Maryland PT and PTA Continuing Education Requirements

Maryland requires:
  • Physical Therapists: 30 continuing education hours
  • Physical Therapist Assistants: 20 continuing education hours
Continuing education is earned during the two-year period preceding renewal.

What Makes a Course Eligible for Maryland CE?

Under Maryland’s continuing education rules, eligible education must be relevant to the professional practice of physical therapy, directed to a professional audience, and support continued professional development.

The Maryland Board also recognizes several pathways through which continuing education may qualify for credit. This means the Board’s published course list should not be interpreted as the complete universe of acceptable continuing education.

Why “Not on the List” Does Not Automatically Mean “Not Accepted”

Many clinicians understandably look first for a course on the Maryland Board’s approved-course list.

The Board itself notes, however, that not all continuing education providers submit their courses for individual review. A course may still qualify under Maryland’s continuing education rules when it meets the applicable requirements or carries qualifying approval recognized by the state.

This is why it is useful to look at the approval pathway, not simply whether a course appears on one published list.

A 20-Hour Running Assessment and Retraining Course for Maryland PTs and PTAs

Pose Method® of Running: A Master Course on Running provides 20 continuing education hours and is rule approved for Maryland Physical Therapists and Physical Therapist Assistants through a qualifying continuing education approval pathway recognized under Maryland regulations.

The online course teaches a defined system for:
  • running assessment
  • identification of technical errors
  • video analysis
  • correction
  • running retraining
  • practical clinical application
For a Maryland PT, the course can account for 20 of the required 30 continuing education hours.

For a Maryland PTA, it can account for all 20 required continuing education hours.

Use Your CE Hours to Add a Practical Clinical Tool

Continuing education can do more than satisfy a renewal requirement.

For clinicians who work with runners, athletes, return-to-running patients, military personnel, or tactical populations, Pose Method® provides a repeatable process for assessing and correcting running mechanics while completing a substantial portion of Maryland’s CE requirement.
